Acupuncture Sports Medicine:
The Low Back and Hip
March 21, 22, & 23, 2025
Learn diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of pain and dysfunction of the low back and hip. Quite simply, this course will alter your concepts about the causes of back pain, and how to treat it. Every year, the staff arrives excited to teach this material, as it is effective and can be integrated most other techniques. We start with the "the triad", which are the three structures of the low back most commonly found in lumbo-sacral pain. The gluteus medius, the quadratus lumborum, and the sacral-iliac joint provide outstanding results for the back pain patient. You will also learn how to use the triad to treat back posture. We included many other injuries and pain syndromes commonly seen in clinic that we call the "secondary pain generators". These relate to the imbalances caused by dysfunction of the structures of the triad, including the trochanteric bursae, the gluteal tendon, and the sacral-tuberus ligament. All this in a mentorship-style group with direct supervision of location, palpation, and needle techniques with Whitfield, Jenny, and our experienced practitioner assistants.

The Practicum Series
The Practicum Series offers supervised practice with needling all those important points and zones learned in the Apprenticeship Program or on the online webinar series Mastering the Treatment of Injury and Pain. We will resume teaching this three day weekend series in 2025. Additionally, we will be adding new material to this course on "regional interdependence". This is a current western physical medicine concept about how each of the anatomical tissues inter-react with the other and their surrounding structures. This allows a new look at local, adjacent, and distal points, something that is centuries old in our medicine. But we can always benefit from how this western physical therapy and rehabilitation concept aids us with assessment and point selection.
We hope to have this scheduled in 2025, both on Maui and in Oakland.
