Seminars and Teaching


Whitfield Reaves, OMD, LAc, has been teaching acupuncturists and other health care practitioners for over 25 years – ever since graduation from his formal training in 1981. Currently, he is a senior faculty member at Southwest Acupuncture College, in Boulder, Colorado, teaching in the classroom as well as supervising interns in the student clinic. In addition, Whitfield teaches seminars on sports medicine acupuncture. All his programs are approved for continuing education credits (PDA’s) by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

Weekend seminars as well as a six-month apprenticeship programs are available, designed for licensed acupuncturists looking for advanced training in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of common injuries and pain syndromes. In terms of sports medicine acupuncture, we teach about the medical care of the athlete and the active person, as well as the enhancement of performance. These seminars integrate traditional Chinese acupuncture with western orthopedic and sports medicine. They include the following:


1. Acupuncture Treatment of Injury and Pain: The Upper Extremity
14 CEU’s (PDA’s) granted, approved by the NCCAOM

2. Acupuncture Treatment of Injury and Pain: The Lower Extremity

14 CEU’s (PDA’s) granted, approved by the NCCAOM


3. The Acupuncture Sports Medicine Apprenticeship Program

60 CEU’s (PDA’s) granted, approved by the NCCAOM

4. One-Day Seminars
On sports injury and pain syndromes to specific body regions, such as the shoulder, the hip, and the back.

Acupuncture Sports Medicine Apprenticeship Program
This is a six-month intensive on sports medicine acupuncture, designed for practitioners unable to attend the weekly sessions of the standard program. The course of study is 60 hours, consisting of three weekend intensives (20 hours, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). It covers the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of common injury and pain syndromes of the upper and lower extremities. All instruction is held in Boulder, Colorado, and the program is limited to from eight to ten students. In addition to the instruction of Whitfield Reaves, experienced practitioners who have completed previous apprenticeship programs will assist in this course.

A one-day workshop on the use of acupuncture in the treatment of injury and pain to the hip. Both acute and chronic conditions will be discussed, in terms of diagnosis, assessment, and treatment.

Acupuncture Treatment of the Hip and Lower Extremity
A weekend workshop on the use of acupuncture for the treatment of injury and pain of the hip and lower extremity. Both acute and chronic conditions will be discussed, in terms of diagnosis, assessment, and treatment. Hip bursitis and arthritis, hamstring strain, ilio-tibial band syndrome, and quadriceps tendonitis will be among the conditions covered during this weekend workshop. Also included is the treatment of the knee, shin, ankle, and the plantar fascia of the heel.
