The Acupuncture Sports Medicine Apprenticeship Program
Instructor Whitfield Reaves, with Staff

THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM DURING THE COVID-19 ERA
We have been teaching The Acupuncture Sports Medicine Apprenticeship Program in its present form for two decades. Obviously COVID-19 has altered the way we run our mentorship-style instruction with supervised practice. We have cancelled the in-person Apprenticeship Program scheduled for this fall in San Luis Obispo, California, in keeping with safety guidelines. However, we feel compelled to continue our teaching of orthopedic and sports acupuncture, uninterrupted since our first course in 1986, and thus we have made adaptations to do so safely.

The upcoming Acupuncture Sports Medicine Apprenticeship Program will continue our tradition and commence on October 17th using Zoom as the primary platform for instruction. We all understand the importance of hands-on experience, and will accept that separate Practicum courses with supervised practice will get scheduled when it is safe to gather.

We have organized our teachings around three sections of the body – The Shoulder and Upper Extremity, The Low Back and Hip, and The Lower Extremity. Please take a look at the adapted new Apprenticeship Program for 2020-2021.

The Acupuncture Sports Medicine Apprenticeship Program is a Certificate program.

Each Section will be structured as follows:
1. Live-stream course (2 days/14 hours total)
Two successive Saturdays, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
A Zoom meeting will conclude each day, from 5:00 to 5:30 pm.
The two-day courses for each of the three sections are approved for 14 PDAs/CEUs by the NCCAOM and the state of California.

2. Mentorship Group Learning (5 hours each/10 hours total)
This portion of the program will follow small group mentorship-style instruction, conducted on the Zoom platform and possibly several of the groups will be live, with masks and social distancing. Subjects will include orthopedic testing, therapeutic exercise, case study discussion, Korean constitution, and acupuncture for enhancing athletic performance.

Mentorship groups are taught by the staff of the Acupuncture Sports Medicine Apprenticeship Program. At least two modules will be taken during each section. Course content and instructors will vary for each section.

3. Group Meetings with Whitfield (2 hours each/4 hours total)
Each of the three sections will include two group meetings on Zoom for all attendees of the program. Whitfield Reaves will moderate and be available for questions and answers. This will also include case studies and some new topics of instruction. One of our objectives is to build professional community with our attendees in the sports acupuncture specialty.

Each section will total a minimum of 28 hours of instruction and professional interaction during the 4 to 6 week period. This does not include the Practicum (6 hours per section) which will be scheduled separately in the future.

Note: In order to earn the Certificate of Achievement in Acupuncture Sports Medicine, the Practicum must be completed along with the course work of each of the three sections.
